Advertising guides

How should a B2B startup get its first qualified leads?

Choose between outbound, content, partnerships and advertising—and measure the leads that become useful sales opportunities.

Define a qualified lead first

Name the buyer, the problem they have, the situation that creates urgency and the next useful sales step. A qualified lead should meet criteria your sales process can verify. Form submissions and cheap clicks are easier to produce than customers. If you cannot describe why a buyer would choose you, direct conversations may teach you more than a large advertising test.

Match the channel to what you know

Founder-led outreach: useful when the target accounts are identifiable and you still need to learn the language buyers use. Keep messages relevant and respect applicable communication rules.

Content and search: useful when buyers research a recurring problem and need evidence, examples or a clear explanation before talking.

Partnerships: useful when a complementary provider already serves your buyer and there is a concrete benefit to working together.

Advertising: useful when you can state a credible offer, reach the right people, follow up promptly and measure lead quality. It is one channel to test, not a substitute for defining the market.

Check readiness before paying for reach

Have a focused landing page, a working contact or signup path, a clear offer and someone responsible for follow-up. Verify that conversions record the intended action and exclude spam, duplicates and controlled tests. Google’s Performance Max guidance for lead generation emphasizes accurate conversion signals and meaningful lead stages. Platform settings and available signals should reflect your sales process.

Plan around the sales cycle

Choose a test budget you can sustain while leads mature. Review the sequence from enquiry to qualified opportunity to customer, retaining the date and original source when you can. A campaign that starts this week may not yield a sales decision this week. Report immature cohorts separately; avoid treating today’s spend divided by today’s closed deals as the final acquisition cost for those leads.

Diagnose clicks without qualified leads

Few relevant visits can indicate a reach, message or audience problem. Relevant visits without enquiries can indicate a weak offer or landing-page mismatch. Many enquiries without qualified opportunities call for a review of targeting, qualification and follow-up. Qualified opportunities without sales can involve pricing, product fit or the sales process. Test the most plausible bottleneck before increasing the budget.

Choose software or service by responsibility

Adsmith connects creative experiments with Google Performance Max and Meta campaign management in self-service. It requires existing ad accounts and does not create new ones. Dedicated Google Search and LinkedIn campaigns are currently White Glove options; their self-service support is planned. If your strategy depends on either channel, compare the full managed-service cost and scope. Review White Glove, see current product capabilities, or compare service approaches.

Use customer evidence carefully

Gitar.ai’s CEO credits Adsmith with halving customer acquisition cost. This is a customer-reported result: the testimonial does not provide comparison dates or a baseline acquisition cost. It illustrates one customer’s experience and does not establish a forecast for another B2B startup.

Your next step

Choose one buyer, one problem and one acquisition experiment. Define what makes a lead qualified, who follows up, the full test cost and when the cohort is mature enough to assess. If advertising fits, review Adsmith’s initial onboarding drafts before paying and check the campaign readiness steps before launch.
