Advertising guides

What should you measure before scaling an ad campaign?

Before increasing spend, check conversion tracking, customer or lead quality, acquisition economics, and the time it takes for an ad to produce a useful business outcome.

Confirm that the conversion is real

Check that the event represents the action you intend to buy: a paid order, a qualified enquiry, or a booking. Look for duplicate events, missing events, and test submissions. Compare platform-reported results with your own order or lead records where possible. A recorded conversion is not necessarily a unique paying customer.

Look beyond click-through rate

Clicks show that an ad attracts attention. They do not tell you whether visitors buy, whether leads qualify, or whether customers are profitable. Check what happens after the click before increasing budget. A strong-looking click metric can coexist with a weak landing page or an offer attracting the wrong audience.

Calculate cost per useful outcome

Cost per acquisition is ad spend divided by acquired customers. For lead generation, also track the share of leads that become qualified opportunities or customers. Include service and creative costs when evaluating the complete economics, and distinguish platform ad spend from total advertising cost.

Allow for your sales cycle

A same-day purchase and a sales process lasting several weeks need different review windows. Recent campaigns may not have had time to produce their final outcomes. Compare consistent periods, document what has changed, and avoid treating a small number of outcomes as a settled pattern.

Check whether the result measures growth or efficiency

General Medicine recorded more conversions from similar spend, while Equip Foods recorded a lower cost per conversion alongside lower spend and conversions. Those are different kinds of improvement. Read the General Medicine and Equip Foods stories, then choose the measure that matches your own goal.

Scale with a review plan

Decide what you will inspect after increasing spend and what would cause you to pause or revise the campaign. Watch acquisition cost, conversion quality, and the budget being absorbed by each campaign. Use the outcome to choose another experiment. Turn results into the next decision and plan the complete budget.
